Progress Report 2: Call for Action: Protection of the Wildlife in Temecula, California

Previously, June 19, 2017, we had reported our initial cleaning up of the area near the Interstate 15 Bridge at the confluence of Temecula Creek, Murrieta Creek, and Santa Margarita River:

The extent of the trash and debris left behind under both spans of the underpass was substantially larger than we could remove in a single day.  We cleaned the west side of the underpass area and the area to the west.  City trucks removed the bagged trashed we placed at a convenient site.

This aerial photo shows the region below the Interstate 15 on the Southern Section of Temecula, California. The underpass is located in the lower section of this photo.

Equipment and the operators made this cleanup possible.

Pam Nelson, the Chair of the Sierra Club, Santa Margarita Group (SMG), initiated the second phase of the project by contacting the agencies and Temecula since they have jurisdictional responsibility for the areas to the east of the underpass.

The Regional Conservation Authority (RCA) was enthusiastic about the cleanup and provided staff and equipment.  Additional labor was provided by the Orange County Conservation Corps, Santa Margarita Ecological Reservation volunteers and staff, and the Santa Margarita Group volunteers.  The City of Temecula provided the 40-yard roll-off which was filled to the brim.

We express our sincere gratitude to all those volunteers who diligently cleaned up the eastern section of the underpass.

Another successful cleanup was completed.  Now we will need to organize monitoring teams to help report incursions to the agencies.
